1 Corinthians 11:28
Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. ESV
The self-examination here specifically refers to one’s focus on the meaning of the Lord’s Supper. It is not a general assessment of one’s spiritual status. The preceding and following verses make this meaning clear. While participating in the Lord’s Supper will do no good for those with unresolved sins, this text does not teach that it will do them harm. Those who eat and drink without considering the sacrifice of Jesus bring judgment on themselves.
